Imprints Year One
The former slave Frederick Douglass once said, “I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.”
In 2008, a book was released with the title, “Becoming the Answer to our Prayers.” In it, the authors argued that many have allowed prayer to lull them into a kind of spiritual apathy. We may pray for God to do something to help the millions of orphans in our world, the famine that kills thousands each day, or the violence that overtakes our streets. We say things like, “God why aren’t you doing anything?” But if we listen, we may just hear God saying in return, “I did something already. I created you. Get busy.”
This month, as we look at Jesus’ teaching on prayer, let us pray not just with our mouths or our hearts. Instead, let us have the courage to pray with our legs and with our lives. Let us pray with the way we live, making ourselves available for God to use. Let us dare to become, not just those who pray, but those God uses to answer prayer.
