You ever feel like your caught in a storm completely unprepared? You didn’t even see it coming and now the winds are blowing, the lightening is flashing, you are getting soaked, and there’s nothing you can do about it? Ever been like that on a boat that’s out to sea? That’s where the disciples were in this month’s passage.
The sea has been a source of fascination for many throughout history. As people, many of us feel its draw, pulling us out beyond ourselves. Maybe it’s the peacefulness of a beach vacation or the memories of childhood, but many of us love the sound of the surf, the taste of the salt water, the feel of the sand. For the ancient Hebrew people, however, the sea had a different connotation. The sea was the home of chaos and represented the presence of evil.
When Jesus walked out onto that stormy sea, it was much more than a miracle. It was a statement that the evil and chaos of this world has no power over him. It was a statement that he was triumphant one, the king, the rightful ruler of this world. This month, let’s allow Jesus to stride out into the chaos of our lives and speak the words we long to hear: “Peace, be still.”
