Imprints (Year 2)
I can still here it ringing in my ears years later - those famous words that probably all parents mutter from time to time to their children: “What do you think - that money just grows on trees?” I can remember from an early age having a warped understanding of money, thinking that if there were checks in the check book or an ATM nearby, we could get what we wanted. Call it childhood selfishness or plain naiveté. Call it consumerism or imprinting from the mass media. The reality is that we don’t naturally grow out of this warped relationship to money . . . at least not without some conscious effort (and maybe a few hard knocks). Jesus understood this and saw the danger that money could have in a person’s life. For this reason, he taught about an appropriate relationship to money and wealth. We will be looking at that this month, challenging one another to exchange the idol of money for the truth of God, the Creator of all, who holds the world in the palm of his hands.
